There are two types of e-cigarette user (ok, so there are actually loads more, but for the sake of this introduction there are two so bear with me), the cloud chasers and the flavour chasers. I can see the appeal in producing giant clouds, but it’s not what I enjoy about vaping. For me, the flavours come first, and I would rather have an e-liquid that blows me away with taste rather than produces massive clouds
The web is packed full of guides and videos on how to make the biggest clouds, but there is not a lot out there covering flavour. Most of what I’ve learnt about achieving the best flavours from e-liquids has been through trial and error, mainly error, so I thought I’d try and help out those flavour chasers just starting out with a few hints and tips.
Tip One - Keep It Clean!
Ok so back to basics for tip one. Keeping your wicks, coils and tanks clean is a must if you want to get the best flavours from your e-liquids. Everyone knows this, but as with any cleaning or maintenance people tend to get a bit lazy and don’t always bother. If you’re constantly changing liquids, then you can’t be expected to change your coil every time but try and avoid mixing your flavours too much.
If you’re switching from a strong tobacco e-liquid to something a bit more subtle, then you’re not going to get the best flavour possible. It’s good to have a couple of tanks on the go with different liquids in each and make sure you're cleaning them at least weekly and allowing them to dry out completely.
Tip Two – Wattage and Temperature
This is probably the simplest to improve your e-liquids flavour and for me the most fun. All liquids are different and finding the right balance to bring through the flavour perfectly can be very enjoyable. For both wattage and temperature start low and work up gradually until you get the taste to the point you want it.
Obviously, taste is massively subjective so what might work for one person on a juice may be entirely different for someone else. As I said at the start, it’s a process of trial and error.
Tip Three – Pick the Right E-Liquids
E-Liquids are a blend of VG and PG, and the ratios you prefer will largely depend on the type of vaper you are. For big clouds VG heavy liquids work best, if you’re looking for flavour then aim for liquids with a 50/50 mix or above. VG and PG are the base elements of an e-liquid; they carry the nicotine and flavours into vapour when the liquid is heated. PG is a much better carrier than VG which is why if you want a liquid packed full of flavour a good ratio of PG is essential.
Tip Four – Experiment with Airflow
If you read a guide on producing big clouds they will tell you opening your airflow as much as possible is very important. The more air you have going through your coil, the less dense the e-liquid becomes. A less dense liquid produces bigger clouds. The downside to increasing the airflow is a reduction in flavour.
To improve the flavours reduce your airflow but be careful not to be overzealous. If you cut it by too much, your vapour production will drop too low, and your liquid may overheat. Take a similar approach as you would with wattage and temperature adjustments, start low and gradually increase till you achieve a flavour that you’re happy with.
Tip Five – Your Atomiser is Important
Having the right atomiser plays a big part in maximising flavours in your favourite e-liquids. As with most of these tips, personal preference plays a big part, but if you follow some general rules, you won’t go far wrong.
Bottom coil atomisers are essential as they don’t require the wick to suck up the e-liquid to the coil as their top coil counterparts do. It’s also important to check if your tank can run sub-ohm coils, by this, we mean anything below one ohm. This plays a big part in improving both vapour production and the flavours you can achieve.
If you take one point away from this post then ‘Don’t be afraid to experiment’ would be it. Everyone has different preferences in flavour and trying different wattage, temperature and airflow settings can make vast differences in your vaping flavour experience.
