CBD is short for cannabidiol a compound found in the cannabis plant. CBD makes up 40% of the cannabis plant and is second only to THC in the plant’s makeup. Unlike the THC compound, however, CBD has very mild psychoactive effects, so will not get you high.
CBD oil that is used in E-liquids will often come from the least processed part of the cannabis plant, known as hemp. Hemp and marijuana both come from the cannabis sativa plant, but hemp contains higher levels of CBD, whereas marijuana contains higher levels of THC, which makes hemp a better source for the extraction of CBD oil.
The types of oils that the CBD is mixed with in the E-liquids vary, and some studies have shown this to have different effects on the body when used long term. We will get into the potential issues later on.
Is CBD Oil Legal?
On October 13th, 2016 the law changed in the UK to recognise CBD as a medicine. The MHRA (Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) have approved the use of CBD oil for medicinal purposes. However, to sell CBD oil for medicinal purposes requires a licence.
Strict controls have been put in place to ensure the levels of CBD used in E-liquids are of a safe level. Providing the product contains no THC, then it is legal.
How is CBD Oil Used in Vaping
CBD E-liquid is similar to regular E-liquids in that it is often composed of propylene glycol-PG, and vegetable glycerine-VG, with the active ingredient in this instance being CBD rather than nicotine. These mixtures may be used in regular vape pens or mods without any problems.
However, if the CBD is diluted in an oil, rather than the alcohol of PG and VG, then a specialised device will be required to enable effective vaping. The oils used are often hemp oil, but maybe other oils such as coconut oil.
If you want to use your regular vape device, then you will need CBD Vape Juice not CBD oil. CBD oil vaporises at around 200ºC.
When you begin vaping, it is usually recommended that you choose an E-liquid that contains nicotine closest to the amount you smoke and slowly work your way down from this.
With CBD it is recommended that you start with the lowest level of CBD possible. The lowest dose available in 50 mg per 10 ml. The effects of vaping with CBD oil are immediate, so you will be able to tell if you are achieving the desired effect and adjust the dosage accordingly.
What are the Potential Benefits of CBD Oil?
CBD oil and E-liquids may help you to quit smoking when used in conjunction with vaping. It could reduce your craving for nicotine. Initial studies have shown that people who used CBD smoked fewer cigarettes. CBD is nicotine free.
Studies have also shown that CBD oil has been effective for many people in helping with conditions such as anxiety and depression. Some people have reported that it has helped reduce seizures and some have used it for pain management, although vaping with CBD oil will not provide you with as much of the medicinal benefits as taking it in other forms will.
There is still very little evidence to support the potential benefits of using CBD oil. However, initial studies show that many find they feel calmer after vaping with a CBD E-liquid.
What are the Potential Side Effects of Using CBD Oil?
As yet, there has been little evidence of many side effects of CBD; however, high doses used over a sustained period of time may cause a few adverse reactions such as a dry mouth and drowsiness. If this happens, it is advisable to reduce the level of CBD you use.
CBD has been found useful in reducing blood pressure, but this can lead to dizziness if your blood pressure becomes too low.
A small study showed an increase in tremors in Parkinson’s sufferers with the use of CBD.
Finally, there is a very small risk that vaping using CBD oil may lead to lipoid pneumonia. This is because inhaling fatty oils of any kind can lead to this condition. It should be noted that lipoid pneumonia is an extremely rare condition, so the risk to health is very low. However, vaping with CBD E-liquid does not carry this risk as PG/VG mixes are alcohol-based, not oil-based.
