For those people who have been vaping for a while or even new converts, it will come as no surprise when we say that not all e-liquids are created equal.
The market is full of options when it comes to liquids, and for the consumer, this is excellent news as there are always new flavours to try.
However, when comparing e-liquids, it’s important to understand the differences in ingredients they contain and how they are produced as this can have a significant impact on the liquids flavour and quality. This is perhaps never truer than when looking at tobacco e-liquids.
Different Types of Tobacco E-Liquids
There are two main types of tobacco e-liquid on the market today. The vast majority of brands use tobacco flavourings which are artificially created. That means that they are synthesised in a laboratory and are manufactured to taste like tobacco.
Flavourings produced in this manner are commonplace and used in all sorts of products created for human consumption. E-liquids using this method of flavouring are generally reasonably cost-effective to make as the flavourings are low cost and the manufacturing process relatively simple.
The second type of tobacco e-liquid is produced using Naturally Extracted Tobacco or NET. This type of flavouring, as the name suggests, is derived from natural sources rather than being produced in a laboratory. There are a few methods for extracting the natural flavours from tobacco leaves, but whichever is used the time and costs involved are substantially higher than the artificial flavouring option.
Creating the Best Tobacco E-Liquids
Choosing Carefully
As mentioned above the process for creating tobacco e-liquids using naturally extracted tobacco is a lengthy one, and it all starts with selecting the right tobacco varieties.
At Red Vape we only work with tobacco producers who create the highest quality of crops. Numerous factors go into cultivating tobacco leaves from selecting the right seeds, the conditions and location the plants are grown in right through to the drying and curing process.
Ageing
Once the tobacco leaves have been grown, hand-picked, dried and then air and sun-cured they are then moistened again to create the optimal conditions for ageing. This is an important step in the process as it allows the flavours and aromas to develop. How long they are aged depends on the variety, but we allow all our leaves to reach their full potential before moving on to the next stage.
The Natural Extraction Process
There are a few methods for extracting the tobacco flavour, but the one we use is called Cold Maceration. This process takes between six to eight weeks during which time the true essence and flavours of the tobacco leaves are extracted. There are quicker options which involve the use of heat to speed up the process. However, by using heat, you run the risk of damaging the leaf which can lead to bitterness. This can very easily overpower the subtler tones in the flavour profile resulting in a poorer finished liquid.
Filtering
To create a truly unique and consistent tobacco e-liquid, we filter all our liquids before bottling to ensure their purity is perfect. The multi-stage filtration process begins at a controlled temperature, and this involves a series of various filters that go as low as 5 microns which is 0.005mm. Any debris or other contaminants are removed meaning the finished e-liquid is pure and of the highest quality possible.
The Finished Product
The final stage is bottling and packaging, all of which is completed at our state of the art manufacturing facilities in Nottinghamshire.
Every step of the process, from selecting the best tobacco varieties, to preparing our liquids for despatch is done so with the end goal of creating the perfect tobacco e-liquid for our customers to enjoy.
